What to know before choosing

  • These questions were selected for frequency, practical value, current planning relevance, and usefulness to working tax professionals.
  • The answers are issue spotters, not substitutes for research based on the taxpayer's facts, timing, and jurisdiction.
  • Confirm current forms, instructions, effective dates, and state-specific rules before applying any example.

1. Does the 0.5% charitable contribution floor apply to every taxpayer?

For individuals who itemize, the planning point is that the new floor applies before the itemized charitable deduction produces a benefit. Compute 0.5% of AGI, then determine the potentially deductible contribution above that amount, subject to the other charitable-contribution limits.

The practical conversation includes gift bunching, donor-advised funds, and whether an eligible IRA owner should consider a qualified charitable distribution instead of a taxable distribution followed by a check.

2. Can a taxpayer use a pay stub to prove qualified overtime?

When formal year-end reporting is incomplete, pay stubs, payroll reports, employer statements, and contemporaneous records can support a reasonable calculation. The file should show how qualified overtime compensation was separated from regular pay.

A pay stub may help, but the deduction is tied to qualifying compensation - not every overtime-related dollar shown on a paycheck.

3. Do QCDs reduce AGI for Medicare premium purposes?

A qualifying charitable distribution paid directly from an IRA to an eligible charity is generally excluded from taxable income. That treatment can keep AGI and modified AGI lower than taking a taxable distribution and then claiming an itemized charitable contribution.

That is why QCDs arise in the same planning conversation as required minimum distributions, Medicare IRMAA, and charitable-deduction floors.

4. Can a partnership simply amend when income or expenses were missed?

First determine whether the partnership is subject to the centralized partnership audit regime. For many post-2017 years, the correction route may be an Administrative Adjustment Request rather than a traditional amended return.

A non-BBA partnership can have a different federal path, and the applicable state correction process may not mirror the federal filing.

5. What happens when a closing S corporation distributes a fully depreciated asset?

Tax basis and fair market value are different. A fully depreciated asset may have zero adjusted basis and still have value. When appreciated property is distributed, the corporation generally recognizes gain as though it sold the property at fair market value, and the result flows through to shareholders.

A closing-year plan should value the property, model the gain, review shareholder basis, and document the distribution. Fully depreciated does not mean tax-free to remove.

6. How far back should a nonfiler go when old partnership and individual returns are missing?

There is no single filing-history answer for every nonfiler. Begin with account transcripts, wage and income transcripts, entity records, state records, and correspondence, then identify the years the IRS or state requires and the years needed to restore a usable compliance history.

Entity and owner returns should be coordinated because late partnership information can change the individual filings. Document what was available, what was reconstructed, and why the filing sequence was selected.

7. Can DocuSign be used for Form 2848 or Form 8821?

Follow the signature rules for the submission channel being used. IRS online authorization tools, CAF submissions, uploaded forms, and commercial electronic-signature workflows do not necessarily use identical requirements.

A firm checklist should confirm the current form version, taxpayer identity, representative information, tax matters, signature and date, and submission method before filing.

8. How should clients track amended-return refunds and changed bank accounts?

Confirm the tax year, filing method, refund election, and account information on the filed return. Retain proof of filing and use IRS amended-return tracking tools and transcripts to monitor the case.

Set expectations early: amended refunds can take longer than original-return refunds, and changed bank information can create additional processing or correspondence.

9. What should an attendee do if a polling question does not appear?

Check for a hidden webinar window and return to the browser or webinar application. If the poll still does not appear or cannot be submitted, send a Q&A message during the session as soon as possible.

The message creates a time-stamped record, alerts support while attendance data is available, and permits an appropriate review of the attendee's participation record.

10. What happens when a handout or resource link changes after a course?

Official forms, publications, regulations, and agency pages move or are replaced. Report a broken link with the course name and affected resource so the replacement can be researched and the resource page updated where possible.

Maintained handouts, links, Q&A pages, and webinar recaps extend the value of a live program by turning it into a practical reference library.
